I only just started reading the book, so I can’t really say much more than this.

This book was a little better than OK. Actually, it was not all that bad of an introductory primer on HOW TO START A HOMEMADE JEWELRY BUSINESS. I stress the word “primer” since it is not very in depth, nor particularly complete. It is well outlined and well written, though.
I’ve had a few SCORE clients come to me and ask for help on turning their jewelry-making hobby into a business. It’s usually hard to help them because trinket jewelry has to be sold in volume to be profitable. And expensive jewelry, which has higher profits per item, is expensive to make. So I have found it is not really a small business to pursue. And the instant book does not explain otherwise.
I would have liked the book better if it had emphasized the need for a sound written business plan when starting a business. [...]

Nothing here about jewelry itself; this is about marketing your creations. This is a basic primer. If you are internet-sophisticated and a natural marketeer, this will be too basic for you. But if you are only artistically-inclined and business is a black box to you (and I don’t mean one inscribed in gold calligraphy with a cotton lining) then you should read “Selling Your Jewelry.”
The book covers internet selling (Ebay, Etsy, other sites), marketing ideas, catchy advertising and listings, tax and other business considerations. NATURALLY you should have a tax professional (like a CPA) on your team. Tax laws change, and accounting, bookkeeping and tax preparation take time–best to hire a professional who knows his business and you concentrate on YOURS: your art and craft.
If you are a novice to business, this will help. I knocked off a star as I thought it was extremely basic, but there is surely a jewelry artist, in fact, probably quite a few out there that will tell me that this is JUST what they need and really understandable, too.
Here is what is covered:
1. The Jewelry Business
2. Style and Niche
3. Know Your Customer
4. Professionalism
5. Pricing
6. Presentation
7. Making the Sale
8. Your Business
9. Lower Costs and Higher Profits
10. Business Operations
11. Tax Deductions
